Sintra

25 minutes

UNESCO World Heritage — a mountain town of fairy-tale palaces buried in forest. Pena Palace sits in the clouds, Monserrate’s gardens are some of Europe’s finest, and the old town has tea rooms and pastry shops worth the detour.

Mafra

10 minutes

The nearest town and home to the Mafra National Palace — a baroque monastery so vast it has its own basilica, library, and hunting grounds. The Tapada Nacional next door is a walled royal park where deer roam freely.

Lisbon

30 minutes

The capital. Alfama’s tiled alleyways, Belém’s custard tarts, Time Out Market for lunch, rooftop bars for sunset. Most international flights land here — your guests can explore before or after the wedding.
